Spring Cleaning…..Workout Clothes Edition

After the snow on Friday, the sunny weekend really put me in the mood for spring cleaning.   Well let me re-word that.  The sunshine gave me a glimmer of hope that summer will actually come, which means I will need to be in a bathing suit so I have to really start consistently working out but I hate all my work out clothes and the closet that I keep them in looks like a bomb went off so I need to get on the ball.  How is that for a stream of consciousness…

I wrote before about the importance of good workout clothes, but I really didn’t do too much about it.  Aside from a few sports bras I haven’t purged my current workout “collection” and invested in some good stuff that will help motivate me.  So this week my goal is to bag up some of my old/un-flattering t-shirts and pants and donate them, but then that will leave me with about 3 pairs of pants and a few t-shirts so I’ll have to re-stock.  Here is the low down on what I need and some of the issues I’m facing.

1. Sports bras – I mentioned that I have bought a few over the last few months but I would like to get a few more good ones.  I’m not Dolly Parton, but I do wear two for extra support so I go through them fast.  I find if you wear two you can get away with the cheaper ones.

2. Pants – The age-old challenge for short people.  I want a flattering workout pant in dri-fit (is that only a Nike thing?) or some other moisture wicking material.  People rave over LuLu Lemon but it’s hard for me to justify the cost when I wouldn’t pay that much for pants that I would wear to work.  Is LuLu or any other high-priced brand worth it or are you just paying for the name?

3. T-Shirts – I really don’t have a problem with these, other than the fact I have too many and most of them have shrunk enough so they hit me right at the belly button…that’s no good.  So even with a good purge I think I will be all set on that front.

So hopefully by the end of the week I’ll have the ill-fitting stuff out the door and I will have a better idea of what I really need.  What are your thoughts on work out clothes?  What’s the one item you can’t live without?



The Importance of Good Workout Clothes

For some reason I totally forgot I had bootcamp yesterday, which left me scrambling in the morning trying to find my “good” workout clothes and packing my bag.   Well my fave workout pants were nowhere to be found.  I actually have 3 pairs of the same pants because I love them so much, and couldn’t find one flippin’ pair!  So I went with some really old Nike capris that started out black but have faded to dark gray because they have been through the wash so many times.

When bootcamp time came I was feeling truly unmotivated and tired but I paid so obviously I was going to go.  I went to change and saw the pants and my heart sank…these were bumming around at home pants, not functional workout pants.  I hated the way I looked, I hated the way the pants moved when I was working out and it contributed to a bad mental work out.  We focused on upper body which is always a challenge for me but instead of focusing on breathing and form I was thinking about my stupid pants!

I think people take for granted the importance of good quality work out clothes. It doesn’t need to be a fashion show, but if you have clothes that make you feel good I swear it gives you more motivation.  My pants of choice are Nike Dri-Fit capris in black.  I bought these at Marshall’s last year for $14.99 and they have been worth every penny.  They are flattering, the moisture wicking helps avoid the appearance of  butt sweat (hey it happens) and the length is perfect.  I am on the hunt for more but I can’t even find the same pair at nike.com.  It must be a discontinued style or something.

I’m Afraid of My Pants

No joke.  I have two pairs of pants in my closet that scare the heck out of me.  About a year ago I loved these pants.  They are dress pants from the Limited I got a few years ago and they fit me perfect.  I started out with a black pair and loved them so much I went back for the grey.  In the summer of 2007 when I started to train for 5K races and incorporated some strength training into my exercise routine I was actually sad that my favorite pants where getting too big, but secretly excited that maybe I was really down a pants size although at that point I was very happy with being a size 4.  

Fast forward to November 2008.  I went to put on my go to black pants and I noticed they were snug. I figured it was just some honeymoon weight that would easily come off and shrugged it off, but I avoided the Limited pants after that. In December 2008, after a half hearted attempt to lose weight I tried them on again and they weren’t just snug, they were tight.  Not just in my head tight where the waist is a little uncomfortable…if I wore the pants out of the house people would notice my pants are too tight and I would be the girl in denial that she gained weight and keeps shoving her butt into her old pants. No one wants to be that girl.

So here I am, struggling every morning trying to figure out what to wear because the temps are getting cooler and I’m not ready to put on nylons to autumnize some of my more summery dresses.  Do I go out and buy new pants and admit defeat or do I use the fear to motivate me? I know I talked about food fears before but does anyone have an item in their closet that maybe causes sweaty palms or nervous giggles?

Here is my food recap from yesterday.  I need to get my calories down to 1200 per day I think.  I weighed myself today because I was feeling light, and I stayed the same which is a total bummer. I still want to lose 8 pounds by Oct 11.

b-fast: 1/2 c oats, 1/2 c skim, 1 banana, 1 tbsp PB (400 cals)

lunch: 1/2 turkey club sammy, side salad with Italian dressing (600 cals)

snack: peach Chobani (140 cals)

dinner: 2 tbsp hummus, 1 ww pita, 1 english muff pizza – ww eng muff, low fat mozz (320 cals)

dessert: small brownie with coolwhip (300 cals)

total: 1720 cals

exercise: none 😦
