And we’re back….

Back again after a many month long hiatus.  Summary of the last few months… crazy busy travel schedule at work, in process of getting new job, get new job, start new job and learn the ropes.  There are still many ropes to be learned but I’m getting there and things have finally settled down enough to get back to posting semi-regularly.

On an exciting note I started running on the regular again and I’m for mileage I’m right around the 2.5 mile marker on most days in about 30 minutes.  Not super fast, but I’m running the whole time.  On a not so exciting note, I’ve gained about 6 pounds (this is in all that transition phase I mentioned above, not since I’ve been running which has only been for about a month).   But I’m trying not to let it get me down and just focus on building my endurance again and eating as clean as possible 80% of the time.

My goals right now are to continue down that path and hopefully lose 10 pounds by the end of the year.  Slow and steady wins the race.

As always, thanks to people who continue to check in there even though I have been MIA.  What have you guys been up to?  Any new lose weight tips or good recipes to share?  Anyone else reading this at their desk at work wishing the waist band of their pants wasn’t so tight (or is that just me? 🙂 )

It’s so weird that I like blogging so much but when things get busy I never carve out enough time to do it.

You know what else is weird? The fact that I have lost 7 pounds and maintained it for a little over a month and I didn’t jump right on here and shout it from the proverbial roof tops.  Did I mention that I maintained it even though the month of May was one giant business trip (1 month, 3 destinations, 6 airports).  I would like to say that I have been exercising like a maniac, but it’s been more portion control and healthy choices than excercise that has been my saving grace this time.

Goal for the 4th of July is to try to drop 5 more pounds and get some muscle back.  I just bought new running sneaks so I’m going to start amping up the cardio and eventually incorporate some weight training again.  The puppy has also done her part in helping me lose weight.  I walk her at least a mile or two every day (longer on the weekends) so although we aren’t pounding the pavement, I still walk at a good pace.

I know I’ve talked about walking vs running before but I have to ask again.  What are your thoughts on walking versus running?  Do you think one is better than the other?

Let’s end the cycle now

I randomly read through some of my past blog posts and I’m really sick of myself! 🙂 I have been talking about my struggle to lose weight for almost two years now and I haven’t significantly moved the needle on the scale yet!  It’s crazy.   Luckily, by chronicling some of this through the blog I am able to identify a bit of a pattern.  I get really motivated, go balls to the wall for a bit, drop a few, get over-confident and then blow it….and the cycle continues.

But now that I have identified it, I have the power to break it.  I REALLY want to fit back into this one pair of jeans I have so instead of saying I want to lose 10 pounds blah blah blah, I will do what some of the experts say and go by the clothes.  My goal is to fit comfortably into those jeans (FYI I fit very UNCOMFORTABLY into them now) by May 31.  That’s about a month and a half away.  Let’s keep each other motivated.  Have any of you ever noticed behavior patterns that you continued to repeat even though it wasn’t good for you?

p.s.  I’m still on the hunt for better workout pants (full length) so if you have good suggestions let me know.

Pigging Out on Salad

I swung by Whole Foods for lunch today because I love the salad bar.  I love loading up on things I probably wouldn’t buy and prepare at home like wheatberries, tofu, tempeh (is that how you spell it?)…you get the point.  I think by now we all know salad bars are a tricky business there is usually enough bad stuff readily available to counteract the good stuff so you really do need to practice moderation when you choose the salad bar option (is it more clear why there is a picture of a salad bar on the banner of this blog now?).

I feel at Whole Foods  I do a good job at this because there are so many healthy options available that I don’t get at my normal salad bar that bacon crumbles or a creamy ranch dressing doesn’t really appeal to me.  Today was the same, I feel like I loaded up on good stuff like lentils, wheatberries, spinach, chickpeas, beets and a little bit of orzo salad which included feta, spinach and an olive oil based dressing on it.  To me that’s a pretty decent salad but I’m sitting here now feeling so stuffed and not in a good way.  So I guess the lesson here is, even if your salad is 90% awesome and 10% junky, you can still eat too much and feel like going into a food coma after. Let’s face it… no one wants to feel fat after eating a SALAD!

Has this ever happened to you?  Do you ever over do it on good stuff and feel blah?

Practice Makes Perfect….For Your Posture

I will be the first to admit I have terrible posture.  Sometimes I catch a peak at my profile if I’m walking by a mirror or any other reflective surface and I’m always shocked at how hunched over I am.  Lately I have been trying to be more conscious of my posture for a few reasons.

1. At barely 5’2″, I need all the extra height I can get

2. Standing up straight really does make you look thinner.  Throw the shoulders back, suck the stomach in and fake it til you make it.

3. There is no third reason…..I just felt it wasn’t worthy of a bulleted list with only two bullets 🙂

Do you guys have any tips for keeping the spine straight?  I start off the day with the best intentions but by 2:00 p.m. I’m slouched over my computer screen and by the time I get in my car to drive home?  Forget about it.  Just call me the Hunch Back of Notre Dame.   I’m interested to hear of any tips and tricks you guys have for standing or sitting up straight.  The biggest challenge I have is sitting at a desk all day.  If I was standing up I think I notice it more, but when I’m at my desk I’m a mess.

Spring Cleaning…..Workout Clothes Edition

After the snow on Friday, the sunny weekend really put me in the mood for spring cleaning.   Well let me re-word that.  The sunshine gave me a glimmer of hope that summer will actually come, which means I will need to be in a bathing suit so I have to really start consistently working out but I hate all my work out clothes and the closet that I keep them in looks like a bomb went off so I need to get on the ball.  How is that for a stream of consciousness…

I wrote before about the importance of good workout clothes, but I really didn’t do too much about it.  Aside from a few sports bras I haven’t purged my current workout “collection” and invested in some good stuff that will help motivate me.  So this week my goal is to bag up some of my old/un-flattering t-shirts and pants and donate them, but then that will leave me with about 3 pairs of pants and a few t-shirts so I’ll have to re-stock.  Here is the low down on what I need and some of the issues I’m facing.

1. Sports bras – I mentioned that I have bought a few over the last few months but I would like to get a few more good ones.  I’m not Dolly Parton, but I do wear two for extra support so I go through them fast.  I find if you wear two you can get away with the cheaper ones.

2. Pants – The age-old challenge for short people.  I want a flattering workout pant in dri-fit (is that only a Nike thing?) or some other moisture wicking material.  People rave over LuLu Lemon but it’s hard for me to justify the cost when I wouldn’t pay that much for pants that I would wear to work.  Is LuLu or any other high-priced brand worth it or are you just paying for the name?

3. T-Shirts – I really don’t have a problem with these, other than the fact I have too many and most of them have shrunk enough so they hit me right at the belly button…that’s no good.  So even with a good purge I think I will be all set on that front.

So hopefully by the end of the week I’ll have the ill-fitting stuff out the door and I will have a better idea of what I really need.  What are your thoughts on work out clothes?  What’s the one item you can’t live without?

Here we go again…..

After getting a stern talking to from Nicole from http://www.cookingwithcoley.com, she encouraged me to stop being lazy and stop blogging again.  Thanks to all of you who have continued to check in on a regular basis during my hiatus. You guys are awesome!

Here is a brief update on the last few months.  I am still struggling with the same 10-15 pounds but I will get to my goal weight by the end of the year if it kills me.  I have to nip this in the bud before I turn 30 (not until Oct 2012 so I have time).    My husband surprised me with the cutest puppy ever on Christmas Eve so now that warmer weather is heading my way, I’m really looking forward to taking her for long walks/runs.  I’m trying to train her to run right next to me so I can just attach the leash to my waist and hit the road.

So, I’m sure all of you are completely bored with my weight loss struggle (I know I am) but I really need to turn this into a success story this year so I welcome any tips, insight or stories you want to share with me.  My other goal is to get back into running this year, nothing crazy, just try to get 2-3 miles a day in most days a week and I desperately need new sneakers.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I don’t want to spend a ton of money.  I’m thinking $80 – $100 max.

So thanks again to all the regulars….and look forward to more frequent posts.  I tried a few great restaurants lately so I’ll share some reviews soon.

What’s been up with you guys over the past few months?
